We often celebrated Thanksgiving with family as I was growing up, and that meant the bonus of driving to Southern California, hanging out with my cousins, going to the beach, staying up late, sharing stories and the newest music finds. Some of my fondest memories were born there.

Regardless of where we were, waking up on Thanksgiving morning, there was always rumble of activity in the kitchen, delightful scents wafting throughout the house, and an eager anticipation of what was to come.

As the day progressed, the rumble of activities expanded to other parts of the house, the designated dining area, where the breaking out of the “special dishes” occurred, and were placed on the table so carefully and with such preciseness.

When the turkey came out of the oven, the rumble of the day crescendoed, and after the turkey had been carved and placed with the other food on the table, everyone came together to have a grand meal. I recall there always being a brief moment of stillness before the laughing, stories and the enjoyment of all the flavorful offerings ensued.

This year, while we are all spread out and won’t be sitting around the same table, we will carry the memories of Thanksgivings past with us, and will bring forward this years at our next celebration.
